Like most people, my money is tied up in bills, food, gas, and the necessities of survival. So when I actually go out and spend my money on something it better be good. Right now I'm wearing a sweatshirt I got less than a month ago and it's already coming unstitched in two areas. I did buy it for $10 at Ross, but still, how hard is it to get a good stitch in clothes? But never mind clothing, what I'm mostly talking about here is "entertainment." I put it in quotes because it's a loose term and not always what I'm looking for when watching a film or reading a book. But at the base level, I am looking to be entertained. When you go see something like No Country for Old Men you know you're going to be entertained, but also come out of the theater with your brain working and maybe understanding something about yourself or what is coming. When you go see Aliens V.S. Predator: Requiem, you're really just looking to see to alien races kick each others asses, cool effects, and fun, inventive action scenes. This movie did none of that. Instead I paid $11 to watch the filmmakers take a dump on the movie screen.
It's hard to get past the marketing sometimes because taking in advertising is just such a routine part of our daily lives now. A regular ad for this movie probably wouldn't have gotten me excited, but the big thing now is the "redband" trailer that shows you a bunch of uncensored stuff that goes down in the movie. I was sold because it at least looked like AVPR was going place the first one didn't go, but in reality the redband trailer showed every single instance of violence that happens in this movie and leads you to believe that these violent instances were attached to cool action scenes, but that's not true at all. This movie was a complete bore from its disposable characters(who I didn't expect to be good, but at least likeable),to the badly lit, close-up filmed action scenes that took place in the rain. There wasn't a single interesting thing in this movie. It was all stuff we saw in the original pre-v.s. films, and stuff that has been done better in their rip-offs. I never expected it to live up to the originals, but I at least expected to have some fun. This was one of the worst written, shot, and edited films I've ever seen, and I've seen A LOT of bad films. Everybody who worked on it should feel bad. How hard can it be to write a fun action movie with such a rich history to it?
Requiem is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as: A mass for the dead. This movie certainly worked as a funeral for a bygone era of action films, and a series that really should not continue on. EVER!
I'm really disappointed in myself because I feel I can see past the bullshit most of the time. I don't even go to the movies that much these days because it's just too expensive to spend my cash on a turd. On my rare chances I like to see something I know is going to fulfill me on more than one level. There are a couple movies out right now that I think are probably much more worthy contenders for my wallet. I'm actually wanting to go out and spend a little extra cash right now. We'll see.
I guess this is more about my wallet v.s. movies, but I feel this way about a lot of things. I think we've accepted a lot of crap into our lives and we've really got to start filtering it back out and into the gutter where it belongs. How do we do that? I have no clue. Just be weary of where your money goes and what exactly you spend your precious time on. Time is sometimes all we have, and you should never throw that out.
Happy New Year folks! Spend it right. Remember, Coffee Time Comics is free so at least you're not wasting any money, and please, donate to the American Cancer Society.

I was at a holiday work party the other night and somebody had the bright idea to have at Dave & Busters at the mall(I think I was a part of that thought process at the Thanksgiving party). This is three days before Christmas. Who in their right mind would want to go to the mall three days before Christmas. It was close to 9 pm when I arrived and the place was swamped. This is the biggest part of the season that is such a holiday killer for me: the rampant consumerism. People can't afford to spend all this money they're spending, yet they do it anyway. I'm a part of it too. I only bought 4 gifts this year(Tobias and I agreed not to buy each other anything because we're broke), but with holiday partys and buying food and whatnot, I'm still spending money I don't have. It's ridiculous what we put ourselves through. If I ever have a kid I swear that I'm going to buy him (or her) three gifts tops. That should do it.
I don't think it's just the consumerism that bugs me though. There's other forces at work. I haven't spent Christmas with my family in about five years and that really peels another layer off of the whole feel of it. I've always gotten to be with friends which is good and I enjoy it, but maybe as I get older I'm looking for something else. Tomorrow night I'm going to a Christmas keg party. Seriously. It's the 3rd annual Kegs 'N' Eggs party at my friends place and it's a real good time. Always is. I'm sure i'll have some good conversation with good people and watch some ridiculous Christmas movies. Then Christmas night Tobias and I will go see Aliens VS Predator 2.
But still there's something missing that I don't think I'll regain. I'm not sure what it is though. maybe someday when I have my own family I'll find it again. But for now it's just kind of there, I'll let it pass by and wait for things to get back to normal again on january 2nd. I know this is all kind of Scrooge-sounding, but it's just how I feel I guess.
Merry christmas! Happy New Year! And Bah Humbug! Thanks for your continued support and remember to please donate to the American Cancer Society.

Sorry about the new page coming up late. I ended up staying in Connecticut for an extra week and wasn't able to put the new page up until I got home and put the dialogue in there. It's up now and tomorrows Across the Way page will be up as scheduled. There's not really too much to get into from my end this week. I have a lot of work to do for the rest of the day and i kind of just want to get into it. I have a feeling I may have a little more to say next Monday.
Thanks for your continued support and remember to please donate to the American Cancer Society.
